What do we learn?

We love the Romans in Year 5!

In Year 5, we have lots of exciting opportunities! We learn about forces, properties of materials and living things in Science – Earth and space is the highlight! In History, we study The Victorians and The Romans. Our Romans topic is finished off by putting on our very own showcase evening to present our work to parents and carers. In English, we learn about a range a genres and styles of writing, and how to adapt our work to suit different audiences and purposes. We are given lots of opportunities to be creative and use our amazing imaginations! In our Computing lessons, we develop confidence in using a range of Microsoft Office programs to present findings – PowerPoint is always a favourite! Our Geography topics are North America and Rivers – we even get the chance to undertake our own fieldwork! In Art, we experiment with a range of techniques and study a variety of artists. We even get time for lots more!

Exciting Trips!

Lots of challenges conquered at Outward Bound

Year 5 is packed full of educational visits. Our visit to Outward Bound in Ullswater in the Autumn Term is an exciting week away. The instructors teach children to be more independent and there is a strong emphasis on teamwork throughout the week. There is a wide range of activities on offer: mountain walks, canoeing, tunnelling and much more! Activities are challenging and push children out of their comfort zones – the jog and dip is the first challenge of the week! Our trip to the Sikh Gurudwara, linking to our RE Sikhism topic, is a fascinating visit. Year 5 always impress us with their sensible questions and respectful behaviour whilst on this visit. In the Summer Term, we go on an adventure to Dovedale in the Peak District to round off our Rivers Geography topic. Children use a range of equipment to undertake fieldwork in the River Dove – speed of flow, depth and quality of water to name a few! A highlight of the year is the visit to Safeside. Children are taught life skills by being shown how to stay safe both in the home and when out and about. The village experience is amazing!
